Onsite - Learn & Explore: National Indigenous History Month (Grades 1 to 5)

On June 10, we celebrate National Indigenous History Month!  It's an opportunity to celebrate the vibrant cultures, histories, and communities of Indigenous Peoples across what is now known as Canada. At ROM, we invite you to join us for an interactive and joyful celebration led by the Indigenous Learning and Programs staff, with special performances from Indigenous guest artists. 

Through an engaging presentation with moments of interaction, storytelling, and artistic expression, participants will explore Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing, while learning about the diversity and richness of Indigenous cultures. This day will include opportunities for students to ask questions, connect with Indigenous voices, and reflect on the ongoing importance of Indigenous Peoples, Communities and Nations diversity. 

We will also offer self-guided time for exploration, allowing visitors to delve deeper into the Indigenous collections and exhibition at ROM. This event is a celebration of culture, community, and resilience, and is designed to raise cultural awareness, respect, and understanding of Indigenous Peoples. 

We encourage educators to bring their students to this lively and meaningful day, where they will have the chance to participate in cultural activities, engage with guest artists, and celebrate the strength and beauty of Indigenous communities across Turtle Island. Let us come together in learning, and solidarity as we honour Indigenous Peoples during National Indigenous History Month. 

Learning Goals 

• Introduce concepts such as Indigenous, knowledges, Nations and belongings. 
• Understand the meaning of National Indigenous History Month. 
• Understanding Indigenous ways of being, knowing, and doing. 
• Showcasing the diversity of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit cultures across what is Now Known as Canada.  
• The interconnectedness of all living things. 
• Contemporizing and making Indigenous knowledges and understandings an important part of everyone’s life. 
• Raise cultural awareness and understanding. 
• A deeper understanding of Indigenous Artistic and Cultural Belongings held at ROM as well as days of importance.

• Tuesdays to Fridays – 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
• Bookings are for Ontario-based groups only. Groups may include schools or educational groups with children/youth aged 11 to 18.
• NEW! In keeping with standard practices at major attractions, ROM has implemented metal detectors and mandatory bag checks at all entrances to the Museum. To ensure quick entry, we recommend that visitors bring a minimum of belongings for their visit. More information on prohibited items can be found here.
