The country now known as Canada, like all countries, has a messy past. But we can learn from history and move forward with deeper understandings. This live virtual lesson with a Museum Educator or Indigenous Museum Educator will focus on the significance of some of the major events, people, and themes in the nation’s colonial history. Different viewpoints and competing interpretations will be explored, as well as how the events of the past continue to affect Indigenous-settler relationships today.

Curriculum Links Depending on the examples the ROM Educator decides to focus on, links may include:

  • Grade 3  Social Studies Heritage and Identity

Learning goals:

  • What is the significance of major events/people (including or especially Indigenous people) in Canada’s past?
  • Does/did everyone view these events/people (including or especially Indigenous people) in the same way?
  • Where do we get our information about the past and how do our sources affect our understanding?
  • How do these events/people (including or especially Indigenous people) continue to affect our lives today?

This Zoom webinar, offered to multiple classes at once, uses images and audiovisual media. Some lessons also include a guided drawing exercise. We suggest having a pencil and paper handy.
