As we approach the winter solstice, peoples in the northern hemisphere’s thoughts turn to light and making it through the rest of the winter. Join us at ROM for the Wintertime Wonders Learn & Explore Day and explore how various groups of people and animals spend this time of year.

During our interdisciplinary one-hour session, we will investigate celebrations of light, winter activities, and innovations and adaptations to survive in the cold.

After our group session, you will have time to explore ROM on your own. See how many cultural belongings, ancestors, artefacts and objects you can find that relate to light, winter and celebrating life! How many adaptations for surviving the winter can you identify?

Learning goals:

  • Social and environmental challenges were a major part of life in all communities.
  • How have relationships with the environment affected the development of communities in the past?
  • Humans and other organisms have ways of adapting to winter conditions in order to survive and thrive during wintertime.
  • How have environmental conditions affected the development of cultures?
