Have you ever looked at something in a museum, and wanted to take a closer look at it? Understand how it was constructed, or formed? What if the artifact or specimen has been damaged over time… can it be fixed? Dive into the world of 3D scanning with Polycam! This lesson allows students to apply exciting 3D scanning technologies to explore ROM’s galleries, and learn how to recreate specimens and artifacts currently housed at ROM. It connects history, technology and design, and encourages collaboration and critical thinking. Join us for an engaging adventure of transforming physical objects into digital wonders!
Learning Goals:
1.Use handheld tablets to capture physical models and render them as digital shapes
2.Introducing 3D scanning as a medium of data collection
3.Recognize the use cases of 3D scanning, involving design improvement, reverse engineering, and artifact and object preservation
4.Introducing integration into CAD software for design and fabrication purposes
5.Investigate the sustainable and ethical concerns of 3D scanning
6.Investigate the creative potential of 3D scanning and interdisciplinary learning
7.Have visitors participate in community-building by contributing to digitization of collections
