December 16 and December 18 and December 19, 2024.

Celebrate Computer Science Education Week with ROM and Minecraft!

We’re celebrating this year with not just one, but THREE exciting hour of code lessons. You can do either lesson independently, or combine lessons if you really want your students to dig into the fun of coding. Each lesson is supported by Museum Educators who will use real museum galleries and objects to make connections and add context to the worlds we’re exploring.

  • December 16 – Timecraft

Square pyramids? Short-necked brontosauruses? Something has gone very wrong here! There’s a glitch in time and it’s up to us to set things right. From our home base far above the Earth, we’ll use our time pod to investigate these time errors and use Microsoft MakeCode to put them right again.

  • December 18 – Escape Estate

Do you dare step into the creepy mansion? If we do, can we find our way back out again? In Escape Estate, we must find clues and code solutions to escape each room of the spooky estate until we finally reach the end… and may even encounter some familiar faces from Timecraft along the way!

  • December 19 – The Show Must Go On!

Join us for this year's NEW Hour of Code! The star of the show is missing, and it's up to our coding pros to save the show! Working together, we'll code our way through the show's music, dance, costumes, and sets, getting inspiration from museum objects along the way, to put together our own spectacular Minecraft performance.

All lessons are intended to be an introduction to coding principles, but our facilitators will work at a fixed pace in order to ensure all coding solutions are captured in the recorded lesson. If your students are working at a different pace, you will be able to pause, rewind, and revisit the lesson as needed.

Can’t attend live? No problem! In this special YouTube Live Format, you’ll be able to pause and play the lesson to go at the pace that’s right for your students. If you can’t attend live, you can still follow along with the recording through the links you’ll receive when you book.

You can also visit rom.on.ca/learning/rom-minecraft to access recordings of past sessions.

 Requirements:

  • Class set of devices with Minecraft Education

  • Familiarity with basic Minecraft controls (movement, placing blocks, etc.)

New to Minecraft?

We recommend that students are familiar with the basic Minecraft controls taught in the How to Play tutorials in the Minecraft Lesson Library, particularly:
