Onsite - Now Known as Canada (Gallery Lesson + Lab)

The country now known as Canada, like all countries, has a messy past. But we can learn from history and move forward with deeper understandings. Join a Museum Educator or Indigenous Museum Educator to learn more.

Elementary grades will focus on the significance of some of the major events, people, and themes in the nation’s colonial history. Different viewpoints and competing interpretations will be explored, as well as how the events of the past continue to affect Indigenous-settler relationships today. 

Secondary grades will focus on issues of sustainability, population movements, and inequality that are rooted in past relationships, events, and actions driven by policies and perspectives of the time. Student will explore key events, discuss modern reverberation, and start to develop a class plan of action of how to engage with these issues in their communities.

Note to Teachers: During the hands-on labs, students have the opportunity to interact with many objects, some of which are heavy. Serious personal injury may result to themselves or to others if a student lifts and subsequently drops an object.

Learning goals:

• What is the significance of major events/people (including or especially Indigenous people) in Canada’s past?
• Does/did everyone view these events/people (including or especially Indigenous people) in the same way?
• Where do we get our information about the past and how do our sources affect our understanding?
• How do these events/people (including or especially Indigenous people) continue to affect our lives today?

• Advance booking is required.
• President's Choice School Entrance hours - Tuesdays to Fridays – 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
• Museum Hours – 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
• Bookings are for Ontario-based groups only.  Groups may include schools, educational groups, daycares, and camps with children/youth aged 18 or younger.
• Add a special exhibition for $2-per-person.  Ask us how.
• Booking includes access to all permanent displays.
