History is filled with various examples of empires and colonial powers around the globe. What lessons can we draw from the past as we move into the future? In this lesson with a Museum Educator or Indigenous Museum Educator students will learn about a variety of different empires and colonies throughout history and discuss parallels to the land we now call Canada. Students will start to develop a class plan of action of how to engage with these issues in their communities.

Learning goals:

  • Colonialism impacts all parts of our life and all parts of the world
  • Empires rise and fall across the world and throughout time
  • Canada is a colonial society
