Honour Indigenous History Month with series of 1-hour play-along workshops. With the guidance of Indigenous Museum Educator Jessie (Gitxsan, Tsimshian) and Museum Minecraft Mentor Sarah, your students will travel via Minecraft to a community on the Pacific Northwest Coast, inspired by and built in consultation with the  kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation.

On arrival, students will learn how to approach the community as a respectful guest. Once invited by the Siyam, they will then learn traditional tasks from community Elders and Knowledge keepers, and take these new skills into the surrounding forests, rivers, and oceans to help the community prepare for the coming winter. Along the way, lessons will be supported by real Indigenous Artistic and Cultural Belongings that currently reside at ROM

If you're just starting this journey, submit a booking for each of these dates.

  • May 30, 1-2pm............ Part 1 - Arrive, Observe, Explore: Students will arrive in the Pacific Northwest Coast community and learn how to visit as a respectful guest.
  • June 6, 1-2pm............ Part 2 - Cedar: The Tree of Life, Salmon, and the Smokehouse: Now that students have learned how to interact with the world in a good way, we begin to help the community prep are for winter by learning about cedar and salmon.
  • June 13, 1-2pm............ Part 3 - Plants and Helping the Community: In this final session, we learn about special plants that will help the community during the winter months, and make sure the community is ready for the coming winter.

In this special Teams Live Format, you’ll be able to pause and play the lesson to go at the pace that’s right for your students. If you can’t attend live, you can still follow along with the recordings through the links you’ll receive when you register.

You may choose to participate in any of the three workshops and still receive a full and valuable lesson, but we recommend booking all three in order to receive the full community experience.

This presentation was developed for Grade 3-8, but we welcome any students who are willing and excited to learn along with us.
